Publication Workshop Report

This workshop was organized to support the development of two draft papers by Chihiro Watanabe and Fumie Iso-Haubner, with the aim of refining them for submission to a leading journal in Japanese Studies, such as the Social Science Japan Journal (SSJJ). To facilitate constructive feedback, we invited three commentators to respond to the papers as if they were reviewers for such a journal.

In addition, the workshop was aimed at assisting Dr. Olena Kalashnikova in revising her grant application and helping the two PhD candidates (Watanabe and Iso-Haubner) review the foundational knowledge necessary for preparing future grant proposals of their own.

The three commentators’ task was to provide comments based on academic publication standards, focusing on the following five key questions:

  • Do the papers and the application demonstrate that the topic has sufficient potential and significance within the field?
  • Have the authors selected appropriate analytical frameworks and key concepts (e.g., citizenship) for their case studies? Would the commentators recommend modifying, replacing, or narrowing any of these?
  • Do the papers and the application adequately cite key prior or existing studies in the field?
  • Are the methods used for data analysis adequate and convincing?
  • Is the use and illustration of data appropriate and effective? For example, are the data presented clearly and in a way that supports the arguments?

At the beginning of this workshop, Prof. Sam Bamkin, the managing editor of the International Journal of Asian Studies (Cambridge University Press), gave a detailed explanation of what happens behind the scenes in the journal’s review process. After that, in each 90-minute session, three presenters received detailed comments on the papers and applications they had submitted.

The workshop provided a rigorous yet supportive environment in which the authors could revise and strengthen their work prior to formal submission. The in-depth discussions and the generous, thoughtful feedback from the commentators made the event exceptionally productive and intellectually stimulating.

Thanks to the high level of engagement from all participants, the workshop was a great success and proved to be a highly valuable step toward future academic publication and research development. We sincerely thank everyone involved for their contributions.
